Amber is an uncommon colour of beach glass to discover, usually only 1 in every 25-50 pieces discovered. This darker, reddish brown tone was commonly used for whisky bottles, bitters and snuff, and possibly even some poison in the 19th century. It provided good UV protection or the contents. Iron combined with sulfur or selenium produces this colour, making strong glass. This colour is stilll used today by breweries and bottles, but the older bottles had much thicker walls so produce larger shards and therefore larger thicker sea glass jewels.

It was a mass produced colour for bottles during the second half of the 20th century, by manufacturers including 7up, Sprite, Heineken and Schweppes. It was not used so much prior to the 1950s so most pieces will date from the late 1900s. This colour was created by adding copper and iron to the molten glass mix, giving a range of green tones from rich to pastel depending on the thickness of the shard.

Black glass, sometimes called ‘pirate glass’ is an extremely rare colours to find, only one in every 2500 pieces collected. On the beach these treasures resemble black stones, but once held up to the light the true colour of the glass can be seen,  usually an exceedingly dark green or sometimes dark amber. Early glass manufacturers produced this dark, almost black glass to provide protection from sunlight to medicines and spirits. It was commonly produced from the 1700s onwards, and these older pieces had much thicker walls than the glass bottles produced today. Iron salt was usually added by manufacturers to create this dark colour which also made vessels stronger, so larger pieces can sometimes be found. Generally the use of black glass waned by mid to late 1800s so finding black glass is prized by most collectors. Small bubbles know as ‘seeds’ in the glass show that it came from a hand blown piece and is very old and rare.  The most rugged pieces of black glass will date to pre mid-1800s.

Pink is a rare colour of sea glass, the chances of finding a piece are estimated as 1 in every 1000 pieces collected. Pink glass was primarily produced as tableware in the Depression era by adding selenium to the glass mixture. It’s more likely though to be ‘sun coloured’ glass, a piece that was originally clear but UV radiation has changed its atomic structure giving it a pink tone. Selenium, which slowly shifts to pink in sunlight, was also used to make clear glass only from 1915-30 when it was replaced by arsenic, which makes it’s easy to date pink pieces as being over 100 years old.

Soft green/sea foam is an uncommon colour, usually only 1 in every 50-100 pieces discovered. It often comes from ribbed coca-cola bottles made from 1915 for around 60 years. In the late 1800s and early 1900s soda and beer bottles were also produced in soft green or aqua. The colour was produced by adding iron to the mix, and a touch of copper could add a blue tone. Thicker pieces with a more blueish tint are likely to be older.

White (frosted clear) is a leading colour found by sea glass collectors. Beginning as clear glass the abrasion of stones and sand, and the corrosion of the salt water produce this snowy white, frosted sea stone. When wet it can look almost clear again but when dry the frosted white patina returns. Clear glass was made by adding an element to counteract any unwanted colour in the sand such as the green from iron impurities. Different elements have been used over time such a manganese from the 1800s, selenium from 1915-1930 or cerium-oxide in the 1940s.
